Blogging from Berlin
It’s not every
day that you get to visit one of Europe’s most culturally buoyant cities in the
hope of finding culinary gold, but a few weeks ago that’s exactly what
happened. On a chilly Wednesday morning,
I started my journey to Berlin at the hub of Heathrow, gathering with fellow
foodies and journalists, fueling our day with a much-needed breakfast. Anticipation
lingered around steaming cups of coffee as at that very moment we had no idea
what the day had in store. Miele had asked a select few to be a part of a
revolutionary journey, something that the world of gastronomy had never seen
before, and little old me was going to be one of the first people to see it.
After a pleasant plane journey across the channel, we landed in sunny Berlin, greeted with a coach and driver set to take us to our top secret location. An old dairy plant turned ballroom revealed itself as our destination and it's from here that my day took a turn in an extraordinary direction.
Once we were all gathered in a room steeped in the companies history, we were leaked information on a certain revolutionary technology that resided behind the doors in front of us. Once these were opened we were transported into what seemed to be, another realm. Waiting for us, rows of tables and our own personal chef, placed to demonstrate how this new technology was going to change the way we use domestic appliances.
It was eventually revealed that Miele will be launching the truly remarkable Dialog Oven. A device that looks like an oven and works like an oven but is much much more than that. The Dialog oven allows a fillet of fish to be cooked perfectly in a block of ice without melting and a cut of veal encased in wax to be roasted to perfection, wax still in tact. It can also defrost a chocolate gateaux at just 20 degrees. How you ask? Well the Dialog Oven detects the amount of energy it needs to cook the food, ensuring heat is transferred with precision leading to precise cooking results and no chance of overcooking or burning.
Now if I could explain the ins and outs of this technology then Miele should really be giving me a job but all I can say it was the craziest thing I've ever seen. The Dialog oven comes with a hefty price tag and won't be released until 2019 but I feel incredibly privileged to experience something before anybody else. Now if you will excuse me I'm going to try and workout why my oven can't wash up wipe up and tidy my kitchen for me.
